Today, ScanSnap released to the new ScanSnap iX100 Mobile Scanner. I’ve had an opportunity to use the new scanner for the past few weeks and I can honestly say this is the ScanSnap many of you have been asking for. The iX100 is an updated version of S1100, ScanSnap’s mobile scanner. It’s great for road warriors and anyone who needs to scan documents on the go and will tuck away neatly in a backpack or briefcase. The big update is it now includes an option for “PC-less scanning”, a feature originally introduced in the iX500.
This means that you can download the companion App (iOS, or Android) and scan to your phone or tablet on the go. You no longer have to bring a computer and connect the scanner via USB cable. When fully charged, the battery in the scanner will scan over 200 pages, which should be enough to last most people a day of regular scanning in the field. Wireless scanning also works with a Mac or PC. When I’m not using the scanner with my iPhone or iPad, I’ve been keeping my iX100 in a drawer in my kitchen and pull it out to scan and process the mail at home. I have the iX100 connected wirelessly to my Mac mini and the companion software pre-configured to scan to a dedicated folder where Hazel will process my files for me. It’s been great to deal with the paper clutter immediately as I come in and then toss it and never worry about it again.
ScanSnap makes the premier document scanners for a variety of needs and introduction of the iX100 and mobile scanning really completes the family feature set nicely. This is probably the single largest feature request I’ve heard from Mac Power Users listeners over the years.
You can find more information, including a video on the ScanSnap Community site. There are a couple of great comprehensive reviews including one by Brooks Duncan of DocumentSnap. I'll have more comments to share on Mac Power Users. The Scanner is available today for $229.
