For a long time I resisted Amazon Prime. Amazon's $79 a year service gives you free two-day shipping on most items available in Amazon's vast catalog along with other benefits including access to free streaming video content and a library for Kindle owners to borrow books. I balked at the price since most orders over $25 from Amazon ship free and arrive in about a week, why did I need it? I tried it and got hooked. Suddenly Amazon became my go-to destination for most shopping items. I still have my weekly trip to the grocery store but Amazon Prime has cut out a lot of my weekend errands and other shopping. Why run to the office supply store to buy toner, just Prime it and it'll be here in two days. I forgot to pickup batteries at the grocery store this weekend, no problem, order them and they'll be here day after tomorrow. It really is convenient.
One of the ways I justify the expense is by sharing my Amazon Prime shipping with family members. Amazon allows you to share your free two-day shipping benefit with up to four people. Note only the two-day shipping benefit is shared, not access to the Kindle Lending Library or Prime video, they'll have to have their own membership for that. According to Amazon's FAQ's the benefit can be shared "with up to four additional family members living in the same household, or up to four coworkers." I'll leave you to sort out the ethics of who qualifies. You'll need to know the person well enough to know the month and day of their birthday, and they'll need to know yours.
Here's how you make it happen:
Log into your Amazon.com
If you're not already a Prime member, sign up for a free trial. You can share your shipping benefits during your free trial period, so you may want to consider starting your free trial at a time when you anticipate a lot of online shopping, maybe around the holidays. Once you're a member log into your Amazon account.
Manage Prime Membership
Once you've logged in you'll see an option to Manage Prime Membership, click it.
Invite a Household Member
Near the bottom of the screen you'll see an option to Invite a Household Member. Enter the the name, relationship, birthday, and e-mail address of the person you'd like to share the membership with.
Have your Friend Accept the Invitation
The person you invite will receive an email asking them to accept the invitation. In order to accept, they will need to know the month and day of your birthday. Once accepted, your friend will have Prime shipping benefits through the length of your Prime membership (whether it be paid or trial) or until you revoke their access.
